We ask everyone who books which route they want, and most people don't know there's a choice. There is, and it changes the ride completely.

The coastal route

South from Diabat along open beach. The sand near the waterline is firm enough to canter properly, and there's nothing between you and the Atlantic for the whole stretch. It's the classic Essaouira ride and the one that ends up in photographs.

It suits complete beginners because it's flat, wide and predictable — there's nothing technical to negotiate, so you can spend the whole time learning to sit and steer. It also suits confident riders, for the opposite reason: it's the only place around here you can safely open up.

The argan forest route

Inland into the argan groves. Shaded, quiet, and technical in places — narrow tracks, uneven ground, and trees to steer around. You'll pass goats, occasionally in the trees, which is a real thing here and not a tourist arrangement.

This route needs more independent control, so we ask for some previous riding experience. In exchange you get shade, silence and a landscape almost nobody else on your flight will see.

Choosing by season

  • June to September: forest, if you can ride. The beach is hotter and busier.
  • October to May: beach. Cooler, emptier, and the light is better.
  • Windy days: forest. The trees block the worst of it.
  • First time on a horse: beach, whatever the season.

What we need to know from you

Be honest about your experience when you book. It isn't a test — it decides which horse you get and which group you ride with. Saying you can canter when you can't means either an uncomfortable hour for you or a slow one for everyone else.
