Essaouira's steady Atlantic swell is forgiving for beginners and genuinely fun for anyone shaking off the rust — coached in small groups by instructors who surf this break every day.
Essaouira is one of the easiest places in Morocco to learn to surf, and the reason is the bay. The headland and the Îles Purpuraires take the worst out of the north-west swell before it reaches the town beach, so what arrives is consistent, well-spaced and rarely intimidating. You get waves almost every day of the year without the heavy, dumping shore break that makes learning miserable elsewhere on this coast.
Lessons run in small groups — six students maximum per instructor, usually fewer. We start on the sand with the pop-up, positioning and a genuine safety briefing about rips and how to read the beach, then get you in the water. Most people stand up in the first session. If you don't, your instructor stays with you until you do.
For improvers we move away from the beginner zone to work on real things: paddling efficiently, catching unbroken waves, generating speed down the line, and turning. Say honestly where you are when you book and we will put you with the right instructor and in the right spot.
When the town beach is too small or too crowded, we drive to Sidi Kaouki, twenty-five minutes south. It is more exposed, picks up more swell and is where local surfers go when Essaouira goes flat. That call gets made on the morning, based on the actual forecast — we would rather move you than run a lesson in bad conditions.
Board, wetsuit and everything else is included. The Atlantic here is cool year-round — expect around 17–19°C in winter and 19–21°C in summer — so a wetsuit is not optional, and ours are good ones that are actually warm.

Questions about this activity
I have never surfed. Can I still book?
Yes — most of our students are complete beginners. The whole first lesson is built around getting you standing on a broken wave in whitewater, which is the right place to start and where the fun is.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You need to be comfortable in water that is chest-deep and able to swim about 25 metres. Beginner lessons happen where you can stand. If you are nervous in the sea, tell us — we will pair you with an instructor who specialises in exactly that.
What is the best time of year to surf in Essaouira?
Winter (October to March) brings the biggest and most consistent swell, which suits improvers and experienced surfers. Spring and summer are smaller and cleaner, which is better for learning. There are rideable waves year-round.
Is the water cold?
Cool rather than cold — around 17–19°C in winter and 19–21°C in summer. The wetsuit is included and does its job. Essaouira's wind makes it feel cooler out of the water than in it, so bring a warm layer for afterwards.
Can I rent a board without a lesson?
Yes, if you can show us you can surf independently. Message us with your level and how long you want the board for and we will quote you.
